Holiday Marketing Challenge Day Four: Holiday Decorations in Your Store

It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas…and Thanksgiving. Stores are putting up decorations earlier and earlier. Christmas tree lots are popping up, neighbors are on ladders putting up elaborate displays, and Christmas music is on the radio. For the Day Four Challenge, we encourage you to do the same! Adding decorations to your business is a great way to market your business during the holidays!

Decorations Feel Cozy

Christmas decorations make customers feel at home. There’s a coziness that comes with the season that only decorations can provide. They make us feel safe and warm while it’s cold outside. In the last post, we discussed how engaging customers in conversations via social media can make your business seem more relatable and down to earth. Decorations will do the same! It makes your business seem personable. Many larger corporations, like banks, have enacted a no-decoration policy in recent years. Where you once found a beautiful Christmas tree in the marbled lobby of a bank, you now see the same posters for credit cards and loans. Adding those holiday decorations show your customers that you wish them good will in the season of giving.

Decorations Create Memories

Christmas Marketing in Detroit
As a child, my family took a yearly trip to a local florist. For the Christmas season, they decorated the place with dozens of themed Christmas trees. You could buy ornaments from the trees, pick out different bulbs, even sit on Santa’s lap. But the most important thing: we always used this trip as a means to kick-off the Christmas season. Putting up holiday decorations in your business can create the same memories for your customers. How amazing would it be if someone walked into your business ten years from now and said, “I loved seeing your holiday displays as a kid.”

Christmas Lights Are Fun to Look At

Light displays are fun! Adding a creative light display to your store will not only make your business more festive, it could also attract customers who might not have otherwise visited! How many times have you seen an interesting display in a store and thought, “I wonder what that is.” You could have a small, figurine village or a Christmas tree lit with beautiful multicolored lights.

Holiday Decorations 101

As always, we like to give you some starter tips.

    • Frost and Snow Scented CandlesThe best thing to start with: a scented candle or scented oil burner. Whether it’s a Glade Plug-In or a candle from your favorite shop, this is a HUGE marketing tip. Why? Scents are the number one means of triggering memories. Apple cinnamon may remind someone of their mother’s cooking. Pine smells like a real Christmas tree. Frost and snow scented candles smell just like a winter’s night. Whatever holiday scent, it will instantly make customers feel warm and welcome in your shop. If you’ve ever walked into a craft store, you’ll know what we mean. Craft stores always seem to smell like cinnamon. Cinnamon is a naturally warming herb. If customers feel welcome the moment they walk in, they’re more likely to patronize your establishment in the future.
    • Christmas Tree with CDsGet a small Christmas tree and decorate it with materials from your business. For instance, if you own a computer store, decorate the tree with floppy disks, cds, keyboard keys, and mice. A coffee shop could hang the paper coffee labels from the branches. A flooring company could hang tile samples. A machine/industrial shop could hang gears. Not only is this festive, it is a memorable and clever way to showcase your products. It’s like your version of a SuperBowl commercial. The whole point of those commercials, aside from marketing a product, is to make them memorable. If a customer enjoys your unique display, they are more likely to remember it and pass on the information to their friends and family.
    • If you need a quick holiday fix, a wreath on your door is an easy addition.
    • Hold a contest using your Christmas decorations! Once a customer has made a purchase, have them write their name and phone number on a paper snowflake, for example, and tape it to the window. Not only will the snowflakes contribute to the decor, they will show how many satisfied customers you have! Plus, customers can be reminded of their purchase when they see the snowflakes in the future. At the end of the season, you can pick one snowflake to receive a 20% coupon. If you want to get a head start, make a paper turkey and have customers write their information on a feather to be added to his tail! You can switch it to something Christmas related once Thanksgiving is over!

Be Creative!

Hopefully, we’ve given you enough ideas to get the snowball rolling. The more creative you can be, the better! Best of luck for your #HolidayMarketingChallenge! Post on 3V’s wall or Tweet us! We want to hear about your holiday decorations!
